May Day at the Ulster Folk Museum

Join us for May Day on Monday 4th May at the Ulster Folk Museum. 

May Day, also known as 'Bealtaine', (the Celtic festival where many of our May Day traditions are derived from), marks the beginning of the summer season This day is full of traditions, superstitions and tales of mischievous fairies!

Come and experience a traditional May Day at the museum. Visit our exhibition houses adorned with yellow flowers to fend off the fairies, tie a ribbon on the fairy tree for luck and listen to folklore tales. Watch craft demonstrations by our talented makers, listen to traditional music and make your own flower crown with Sow Grateful, made with flowers grown on their local nature-friendly flower farm (while stocks last). 

Spring Wildflower Woodland Walk
11am, 12pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm

Meet at Drumcree Church (Map no. 38)

Join the Botanical Society or Britain and Ireland for a guided walk around some of the museum’s wild spaces to discover spring wildflowers such as bluebells, primrose and hawthorn. Hear about the ecological importance of our spring wildflowers and some of the folklore associated with them.

What to know: 

  • You can arrive anytime between 10am and 3.45pm - the museum closes at 5pm
  • This is usually a busy period at the museum. Parking is available in our main car park and overflow car parks will be available - parking is limited. 
  • Where possible we would advise that you use public transport wherever possible, the closest train station is Cultra
  • There is a green ticket option providing a 20% discount for visitors that travel by bus or train to the event (proof of transport ticket required on arrival)
  • Pop into the Ballycultra Tearoom for lunch, or bring your own picnic along to enjoy in one of our outdoor picnic areas scattered across the site.
